Background of the Study

First aid is a critical skill in healthcare that enables quick and effective interventions in emergency situations before professional medical help arrives. Nurses are often the first healthcare providers to encounter patients in critical conditions, such as during accidents, cardiac arrests, or other life-threatening situations. Proper first aid training empowers nurses to provide immediate care, stabilize patients, and potentially save lives while awaiting further medical treatment (Suleiman et al., 2024). However, despite the significance of first aid, not all nurses may possess adequate training or apply it consistently in emergency scenarios.

In Sokoto State, like many regions in Nigeria, healthcare infrastructure is challenged by a shortage of trained personnel and resources. Nurses, especially those in primary healthcare settings or rural areas, often find themselves dealing with emergencies where proper first aid can make a significant difference in patient outcomes. The effectiveness of first aid training among nurses in Sokoto State, including the quality, frequency, and application of this training, remains largely unexamined. This study seeks to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of first aid training among nurses in Sokoto State and its influence on patient care during emergencies.

Statement of the Problem

The ability of nurses in Sokoto State to effectively perform first aid in emergency situations is of critical importance for patient survival and recovery. Despite the recognized importance of first aid skills, there is no comprehensive assessment of how well nurses in Sokoto State are trained, how often they refresh their knowledge, or how effectively they apply these skills in practice. Poor knowledge or lack of training in first aid could delay timely interventions, resulting in poor patient outcomes. Therefore, this study will assess the effectiveness of first aid training among nurses in Sokoto State and its role in emergency care.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of first aid training among nurses in Sokoto State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of first aid training in improving the response of nurses during emergency situations in Sokoto State.

3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in applying first aid skills and propose solutions for improvement.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of first aid training among nurses in Sokoto State?

2. How effective is first aid training in enhancing the performance of nurses in emergency situations in Sokoto State?

3. What barriers do nurses face in applying first aid skills during emergency situations in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Sokoto State with formal first aid training are more effective in handling emergency situations than those without training.

2. Nurses in Sokoto State face significant barriers, such as insufficient resources and lack of regular training updates, that hinder the application of first aid skills.

3. Providing continuous first aid training and resources will significantly improve nurses' performance in emergency care situations in Sokoto State.

Definitions of Terms

• First Aid Training: The process of teaching individuals, especially healthcare providers, how to provide initial emergency care to individuals who are injured or ill, often in life-threatening situations.

• Emergency Care: Immediate and temporary care given to patients who are suffering from acute illnesses or injuries, often before they receive professional medical treatment.

• Nurse Performance in Emergencies: The ability of nurses to effectively respond to emergency situations, including their competence in providing first aid and stabilizing patients.
